Mrutyunjay Mohapatra appointed IMD chief
Renowned scientist and cyclone warning specialist Mrutyunjay Mohapatra were appointed as the chief of India Meteorological Department (IMD) on 4 June 2019.
Mr. Mohapatra leads the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD.
The IMD is responsible for the weather and climate-related forecasts in the country.
It is also mandated to issue warning to people about severe weather phenomenon like cyclones.
Mumbai ‘most congested’ city
‘Traffic Index-2018’ was released on 5 June 2019 by location technology specialist TomTom.
Mumbai ranked first in the index with a congestion level of 65%.
New Delhi ranked fourth with a congestion level of 58%.
The study covered 403 cities in 56 countries and defined congestion as the extra time added to road travel when traffic doesn’t flow freely.
'Benchmarking India's Payment Systems' report
The report on 'Benchmarking India’s Payment Systems' was released by RBI on 4 June 2019.
The report says India has a strong regulatory system and retail payment systems but more efforts are needed to bring down the volume of the paper clearing.
The country is 'strong' in areas like having necessary laws and cash in circulation per capita.
L&T launches ‘Digital Sakhi’ in Tamil Nadu
L&T Financial Services’ (LTFS) ‘Digital Sakhi’, an educational program aimed at digital financial inclusion of rural women, was launched in 20 villages of Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu.
LTFS in association with Sri Aurobindo Society will train and develop a team of 100 rural women (Digital Sakhis) as digital enablers.
Index to measure fiscal performance launched
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has launched a Fiscal Performance Index (FPI) to assess state and central budgets.
The Index incorporates qualitative assessments of revenue expenditure, capital expenditure, revenues, fiscal prudence and the level of public debt arrive at a more holistic picture of the fiscal performance than the fiscal deficit to GDP ratio.
India and China hold bilateral dialogue
India and China held the sixth round of dialogue on disarmament and non-proliferation in New Delhi on 3 June 2019.
The dialogue was held within the framework of regular bilateral exchanges.
The Indian delegation was led by Indra Mani Pandey, who is the additional secretary of disarmament and international security affairs in the ministry.
Delhi Metro receives power from waste
The Delhi Metro has become the first ever project in the country to receive power generated from a waste-to-energy plant.
Delhi Metro has started receiving 2 MW power from a 12 MW capacity waste-to-energy plant set up in Ghazipur.
The waste-to-energy plant set up by East Delhi Waste Processing Company Limited (EDWPCL).
